Deck Interviews

Today’s interview takes us on an adventure with my recently acquired Steampunk Tarot deck.  This fascinating deck is by our well-loved tarot writer, Barbara Moore, and the talented artist, Aly Fell.

Steampunk Tarot was published in 2012 by Llewellyn.  You can also read my review of this deck at:  www.tarotwisdomreadings.com/tarotdecks/Steampunk.html

This interview is a fun story (and thus a little long) – so grab a tea, coffee, or beverage of your choice, and let yourself enjoy as we go on a journey to the land of Steampunk.

And now, let the magical adventure begin . . .

************************

“I must be dreaming again,” I mumbled as I picked myself up from the ground and rubbed my sleepy eyes. Every time I’m getting ready to interview a new deck of tarot cards, this seems to happen to me.

“And whatever are these clothes I’m wearing?!  I don’t own a dress like this.  Ugh, this thing that is pinching me must be what they call a corset.”

However, I rather liked this dress for some reason . . . despite the corset that has to go!  The dress seemed to have come out of another time – or is it a dress of the future?  I wondered, as I dusted myself off and admired the material and style of the dress.

“Well then, I should be used to these oddities by now.  Let me take a look around.”

“Aha!”  I spotted some kind of machine that looked like an old-time airplane among a patch of trees that partially hid the contraption.  Yet it sort of looked like a ship, too.  “That must be the time machine I arrived in . . . in this dream, that is.”  But why do these dreams feel so real to me?”  I silently wondered.

Well, speaking of “contraptions,” I absolutely MUST figure out how to get this corset contraption off of me!  I tried to find a zipper and fiddled around with some buttons, but this was proving to be quite difficult!

Just then, a bark startled me, and I lost my balance.  Had it not been for the kindly young man who saved me from falling on my behind, I would have been quite embarrassed.

“My apologies, Miss!  I didn’t mean for my dog to startle you like that.  He was just happy to meet you is all.  Are you all right?”

“Oh yes, I’m fine.  Just fine, thank you.”  I was hoping he had no clue what I had been trying to do when he suddenly appeared out of nowhere!

“But perhaps you could help me.  I seem to be lost,” I said.

“You are Velvet Angel, the Tarot Deck Reporter?  Am I right?”

“Why yes, I guess that would be me.  I wanted to interview the Steampunk Tarot deck.  And you are . . .?”

“I’m The Fool of the Steampunk Tarot, Miss Angel.  I’m here as your guide to our special city – Steampunk Land.  I’ll introduce you to the people who will be right happy to answer your questions for your news report story.”

“Oh, just call me Velvet.  And it’s a great pleasure to meet you, Mr. Fool!

“The pleasure is all mine, Velvet,” the Fool said as we shook hands.  “I represent the beginning of a brand new adventure that you will not likely soon forget.  Take everything in and enjoy the journey.  Shall we go then?”

“Certainly.  Please lead the way,” I replied.

“Oh . . . and not to worry about your aero star cruiser.  I’ll have some people come out and restore it for you.”

Aero star cruiser?  I guess I thought it was some sort of a time machine.”

“But of course it is, Velvet.  Seeing that it landed in the trees, though, it may need to be checked over before you depart.  That’s quite an interesting model you have – haven’t seen one quite like it before.”

“Neither have I.”  I mumbled under my breath.

“Before I forget,” said the Fool, “here is your identification card.  You’ll need to wear this before we get to the gates.

The Queen requires it, as she doesn’t take well to uninvited guests.  And since you have been invited, this card will be like your pass to our city.”

He handed me a card that was attached to a necklace to put around my neck.

“You are now an honorary citizen of Steampunk Land, and we welcome you as our guest!”

“Thank you, Fool,” I responded.  I put it around my neck.  Gosh, this kind of makes me feel important, even though I didn’t really consider myself a “reporter.”  Oh well, I guess that’s what I shall be today . . . in this very realistic dream, I reminded myself.

We walked down a path for a ways, and over a hill, there was the most breathtaking scene I had ever witnessed.  People were dressed in such fascinating attire that seemed to come out of the past but perhaps from the future as well.  Many people were busy amidst the hum and whirring sound of machines.  It was noisy, but not in an unpleasant kind of way.

Everything seemed to be humming in rhythms, and people were smiling and seemed to enjoy their work as they sang or hummed, too.   All sorts of contraptions were everywhere.  (And there’s that “contraption” word again – which reminds me of this corset that is now causing me to itch!)

We soon arrived at the golden gates which seemed to open magically of their own accord as we approached.  Inside the gates, it was even more intriguing to see everything close up.

The Fool’s little dog scampered off to chase some rabbits.  We walked up to the doors of the main house – which looked to be one of those fancy, beautiful homes from the Victorian Era.  The Fool and I stepped inside.

The Queen of Swords was seated, and with a hand from her husband, the King of Swords, she rose to greet us.  I wasn’t sure whether I should curtsy or what I should do, so I stood there somewhat frozen.

“Welcome to Steampunk, Velvet.  I am the Queen of Swords, and this (she looked over at her husband) is the King of Swords.”  I couldn’t miss her glance at me to ensure that I was indeed wearing the identification necklace.  This queen made me feel nervous, but welcome, all at the same time – if that is even possible.

“I trust your day with us will be all you expected.  Before we go to the garden, do you have a question you would like to ask of me to get your news story started?”

Velvet Angel:  Yes, thank you, Queen.  Can you tell me a little bit about the Steampunk Tarot, please?

Queen of Swords:  Of course.  In Steampunk land – and in the lives of people everywhere, it is ideas that fuel creativity and invention.  As you noticed, you see inventions around you everywhere here.  There is a reason for that.  I’m sure you’ve heard how the mind is a terrible thing to waste?  Well, we firmly believe that to be true in Steampunk.

And we also believe that an idea is a terrible thing to waste, too.  Yet we see people all the time who waste ideas because of one excuse or another.

Ideas start in your head.  Everything is born from an idea.  The cogs and the wheels are always turning.  From those ideas, we learn how to cut through them to find the perfect gems that are workable in the real world.  We find what is unique and useful.  We cut out that which is not useful to us.

And thus, the Steampunk Tarot is a gateway to leadership for anyone who is brave and bold enough to accept this challenge.  You must be able to lead your own life well before you can lead others.  We support new ideas, systems, communications, and inventions – all things that come from the intellect and the imagination.  If you can think it, you can plan it and create it.

This is how we are of service to our intelligent users – to bring the best leader out of them through the unique approach of Steampunk.  Tapping into those qualities, however, will require discipline, and sometimes a bit of tough love as well.

We won’t always go easy on those who read with us.  But that is because we are designed to stretch your imagination to see all the possibilities that are available to you.  But don’t be alarmed – just because we don’t always go so easy on you, it doesn’t mean that we are without compassion.  We bring you the truth, because you cannot work with sugar-coated lies.  We are direct and responsive, and we are honest.  And as you’ll find, we can be witty and fun as well.

There’s far more to us than what you see on the surface, Velvet.  By the end of this day, I’m sure you will agree.

Velvet Angel:  What makes Steampunk different from other tarot decks?

The Queen looked up to her husband, the King of Swords, to indicate that he should reply next.  He smiled and said, “Let me show you.  Please follow me into the library.”

King of Swords: There are books upon books of knowledge from which we can gain wisdom.  But everyone has interests that will differ from the next person.  So the book that is right for one person might not be right for another.  Yet some books go over well and attract a very large audience of readership.

Additionally, information is of not valuable until we actually do something with it.  The Steampunk Tarot is not just idle reading.  It is engaging.  It makes you think beyond what you are accustomed to seeing in traditional tarot cards.

And that is the whole purpose of any good book or course of study – to be engaged enough to learn and think about what you’ve read or studied . . . so that you may apply this wisdom in actual practice.

As my dear Queen explained, we are designed to get you to think by stretching your imagination.  But we are also here to drive you toward doing something with those ideas – and not wasting them.

Some decks are quite emotionally based, and we like to think of ourselves as being based upon logic, thought, and ideas first and foremost.  You need to think before you can plan and do anything worthwhile.  You need to have an idea before you can know how you feel about it.  And you need logic to help you solve problems.

The intellect may be under rated in some decks.  But with Steampunk, we’re going to give your thought processes the work out that your mind deserves.

I mean, just look at us – we are one of a kind when it comes to tarot.  We are unique.  And this difference in itself is going to get you to pay attention and explore a bit more than you may do with other decks.  And you are the one who has the control over this knowledge and what you will do with it.  Use it wisely, and if you do, it can take you far.

After enjoying tea in the garden with the Fool and the Queen and King of Swords, the Fool then indicated that we had much to explore, and that it was time for us to be on our way.

We walked through the town, and I took in the scenery that made me feel I had gone back in time.  But I guess I must have, since I apparently arrived in a time machine – or rather some contraption known as an aero star cruiser.

Oh, darn those contraptions!  I asked the Fool to direct me to a ladies room to freshen up.  I couldn’t stand another moment of this pinching, itchy corset.  THAT is one thing that I will leave back in time for sure!

The Fool escorted me into a tavern.  I found the ladies room, and after what seemed like forever, I finally managed to set myself free . . . and BREATHE!  But what to do with the corset now?  Hmmm, I’ll hang it up here in this ladies room in the tavern.  Make ‘em wonder!  LOL

With a mischievous grin on my face, I came back out to a rather nervous looking Fool who said he was getting a bit worried about me and thought he may have to find someone to check on me.

“You look different,” commented the Fool.  Did you do something different with your hair perhaps?”

I grinned.  “Let’s just say that I can breathe now, and we’ll leave it at that.”

“Very good then.  Let’s get on with the tour.”

As we walked back outside, I saw an interesting horse and a noble rider whom everyone seemed to be admiring.  I knew I wanted to ask him a question next, so I approached him.

Excuse me, Sir!  I’m a guest of Steampunk Land today, and was wondering if you could answer a question for me?  You see, I’m a Tarot Deck Reporter and was invited here to write a story about Steampunk.

He glanced at my identification card and said, “I would be delighted to help, young lady.  Please hold my wand of victory and share in the triumphant celebration.  Our victory is your victory, too.”

“Thank you so much.  This is such an honor!” I replied, as I took the wand from him and watched a magical dance of sparks emanate from the wands.  Everyone clapped and cheered.

“Now, how may I help you, young lady?  It’s my honor to be of service.”

Velvet Angel:  Can you tell me, please – What are your strengths as a tarot deck?

Six of Wands
What a delightful question you’ve asked of me!  Why, we are here to show you your own strengths and to hone and honor those assets that you have within you at any given moment.

A victory in life is never accomplished solo.  Even if you are the main contributor of something, there will always be other people and/or tools that help you get the job done and will back you up with support.  We serve as your supportive tool – to work with you and help you carry on and accomplish victories, both great and small.

As a deck, we inspire and honor the hero within you.  We motivate you to see and appreciate that even difficult situations can eventually become victories.  It does take hard work on your part at times, but you’ve got it in you to do what it takes.  Wisdom without action will never accomplish anything, so we inspire you to use that wisdom in productive ways that will propel your life forward.

As the Queen and King of Swords mentioned, everything starts with the idea, and we are here to help you take productive action on those ideas.  We are here to help you find your passion and understand where your true success lies.  And we think we are an interesting deck – which makes us stand out in a way that many people will indeed sit up and take notice.

Nothing boring here – it’s all excitement and adventure which leads you to the path of knowledge so that you can remember and utilize what you learn with us.  Education of any kind is more useful when it’s fun!

At that moment, the lady owner from the tavern came out carrying my recently ditched corset and exclaimed, “Who is bein’ the wise cracker here and leavin’ a corset in me ladies room?  Who, I ask?”  As everyone stared at her, but said nothing, she said, “Oh well, never ya’ll mind.  This one’s a dandy, and I think it’ll fit me.  Go on now, go on.  Show’s over.”

I stifled a chuckle, and composed a serious expression, and then asked the Fool if we could continue the tour.  The lady said the “show was over,” but I didn’t want to stick around and take any chances – as funny as it was.

I quickly thanked the Six of Wands gentleman, and the Fool and I made our way to a lovely garden where I saw what looked to be a statue of a hand holding an ornate pentacle.  Or perhaps this statue was some kind of mechanical device, as it looked quite unusual.

We sat down on a concrete bench.  “What is your next question, Velvet?”  asked the Fool.  You can ask now if you would like.

I looked at the statue, and then back to the Fool.  “You mean this statue thing will talk?”

The Fool let out a bellow of a laugh, and said, “No, not all things talk.  Does everything talk in your world?  Are you always this naïve, m’lday?”

“Ehem . . . well, so I’ve heard anyway – the naïve part, that is.”

“Silly lady and tarot reporter, you can ask ME questions, too.  I’m your guide, remember?  Unless, I’m just meatloaf or something.”  He looked down and pretended to be hurt at the idea of not being important enough to answer questions for a reporter.

Meatloaf?  Now that struck me as funny.  And we simultaneously began to laugh.

This adventure was fun!  And I didn’t even want to think about waking up from this dream – not yet!  Tomorrow was soon enough to get down to the business of the real tarot deck interview that I had scheduled to get done.  For now, I planned to enjoy these magical moments of adventure.

“Okay then, Mr. Fool.  I will ask my next question, but I will warn you – it’s a tough one.”

“Nothing like a challenge, Velvet.  Ask away!”

Velvet Angel:  What are you limitations as a tarot deck?

The Fool looked up to the mechanical statue – perhaps for inspiration from which to respond to my question?  He seemed to be taking it all in – almost as if this statue was silently conversing with him.

“Ahem, I did warn you that the question would be a tough one, Mr. Fool.  Would you prefer that I ask something else instead?”

“Oh no, this question is perfect, Velvet!”

Ace of Pentacles
The question is perfect, because I am the Fool where some limitations do exist – and that is because I represent the beginning of things.  And here is the beautiful Ace of Pentacles.  Aces represents beginnings, too, you know.

So you, see, Velvet – the limitation of Steampunk is probably not all that different from the limitations of others tarot decks.

We represent just the beginning of things – the beginning of new knowledge and wisdom.  But it’s always up to you to take it and shape that as you will.

It’s up to you to make practical use of the knowledge and information you gain from us.  We can show you many things, but only you can create the experiences yourself.  We are just the beginning of all that can be.  You are the one who must nurture the roots we plant – if you expect things to grow.

We show you the potentials and what is possible for you to attain.  But you must reach out and take it and create it.  We are but a deck of cards in reality, but the practical information we offer is something that you can use as a starting point to shape a situation as you desire.

We can point out the paths that are available to you, but only you can choose to walk that path or not. Only you can choose which path you will take.  Essentially, Velvet, each person who reads with us is responsible for creating his or her own luck. We can’t do that part for anyone.  It’s up to you to nurture the desired possibilities and make changes or new creations as you deem fit.

“That’s such a wise answer for a Fool to share!  I’m impressed Mr. Fool.  Thank you!”

The Fool smiled and looked quite pleased for the compliment.

We then walked back toward another area of this amazing city.  This was a rather dusty area, but interesting nevertheless.  I spotted a sweet scene from the Six of Cups where a young man was presenting flowers to a girl.  I told the Fool that I wanted to speak with them – but first, I allowed them to have their private moment with the flowers and sweet conversation . . . trying not to eavesdrop of course.

I approached the young people and introduced myself as the tarot deck reporter who was doing a news story on Steampunk.  They seemed excited to be included in my story and eager to share with me.

“I know you both are young, but everyone here seems to be wise beyond their years, and I think perhaps you could help me out, as words of wisdom from the suit of Cups would be a lovely addition to my story.”

The young man beamed and said, “We’re honored to assist you, ma’am.”

Velvet Angel:  What are you here to teach us?

Six of Cups
Well, I know that the Queen and King of Swords may have given the impression that it’s all about logic, but we also know how much we love to give and share with our readers of this deck.

Yes, it starts with the idea and logic.  But that is just the beginning.  With Cups, there are emotions so that you can also understand how you feel about your ideas and intentions.

Take for example the flowers I just gave to this girl . . . whom I like a lot (him blushing while she is grinning from ear to ear) . . . I knew I liked her, but I also had to act on my feelings, or else she never would have known how I feel.

We teach you that an idea or a thought will eventually bring emotions into the picture.  You have to use both mind and heart to accomplish things in life.  You need a balance between intellect and feelings.  Because after all, what is an idea worth if you don’t enjoy it?  You have to know it’s right for you and that you feel happy being a part of it.

As the Six of Cups, we represent memories that can be looked back upon to bring a smile to your face in times to come.  I’m sure you will always remember your first adventure with the Steampunk Tarot – perhaps standing out even among many of your other decks.  And in those memories are also things you have learned – the lessons from the past that you are meant to remember and use in life.

We are not a hardcore deck, as we show you this gentle side to our nature.  Sometimes a truth will come to you from something in the past, and therefore, there will be times that we gently remind you of something form the past which will help show you the way to your future.

“Very well said, young man.  And I thank you and this young lady for talking with me today.  I will never forget you or this fantastic adventure in Steampunk Land, that is for sure!”

The Fool then took me by the hand and said he wanted to introduce me to the wise master story teller that everybody loved in Steampunk Land.  I was trying to guess which card it might be . . . and then we came upon a bearded man with two children seated in front of him.  It was the Hierophant.

With books on the table and the little girl taking notes, it seemed to be like an informal class setting.

The Hierophant looked up and smiled in greeting.  “Ah, hello, Fool.  Do introduce me to your friend.”

“This is Velvet Angel, a tarot deck reporter who has come to Steampunk to write about us.  She’s an honorary citizen for today.  I’m showing her around and letting her meet some of our people.”

“Very good indeed!  It’s nice to meet you, Miss Velvet.  Would you care to join us for a story today?  You and the Fool are just in time, as I was getting ready to begin.”

I eagerly accepted his invitation to join in.  He asked, “I’ll tell you what, Velvet.  If you have a question for me, I will be more than pleased to tell a story based on whatever you would like to know about us.”

“Thank you, Mr. Hierophant.  I think I’ve got the perfect question which was surely meant just for you.”  The Fool and I sat down with the children, and I then asked my question.

Velvet Angel:  What makes for a successful reading?

The Hierophant seemed pleased with my choice of question, and he began . . .

Hierophant
A successful reading, dear listeners, always comes from you.  But where you get the material for your reading may also be attributed to information and lessons that are passed down through the generations from books and teachers.

Eventually, you learn how to make the information your own as you add value to a story from your experiences.

We often think of a Hierophant in terms of a community or a group setting, like we have right now with all of us in attendance.  But did you realize that you can also be your own Hierophant as well?

A successful reading is not just about book answers, although that is where it all starts at the beginning.  A new student will study and learn from books and others.

But with time, practice, and experience, that student will spread his or wings and fly with this knowledge.  That student will become successful through a combination of group study, books, and then finally his/her own sacred beliefs that develop in time.

As the Hierophant, I am merely the bridge between the theories contained in traditional knowledge and the actual practice and experience that will be gained.  You see, some people who are new to this craft begin with a belief that they can only be right if they follow books to the letter.  But with practice, they learn to add to a reading with personal experience and beliefs they have developed.

Book learning represents merely one of the keys to the understanding that is necessary to provide a successful reading.  The other key, however, comes from you.  Therefore, a successful reading happens when one combines traditional wisdom with personal beliefs and wisdom.  It’s really not just all about a book answer, like many people believe.

When you read according to the interpretations that you see in the cards – and not just in strict accordance with a book or a manual – your reading will be successful, because it follows what you believe to be true.  You unlock the keys to your intuition, and that creates a successful reading experience that is more valuable that just what is written in a book.

The Fool and I sat in for more stories that the Hierophant shared.  We watched the little girl take careful notes, while the boy just listened.  The Hierophant pointed this out as an example of different people learning by different means.  “Some people like to read, write things down, and absorb knowledge in that way . . . while others just listen intently and take from a lesson what they can recall from memory.”

“Some people learn best in group settings.  Some like to learn by themselves through reading books.  Some people prefer structured and formal settings, while others like the informal environment best.”  He explained to us that there is never just one right way to do something. All roads will ultimately take you to the same destination.

I shook the Hierophant’s hand and wished the children well, and then the Fool suggested that we go have a drink.  I was a little bit uneasy to see that it was the same tavern we had been to earlier when I used the ladies room – and where I had left the corset which was soon discovered by the tavern owner.

Oh well, at least I can breathe now – and perhaps that corset will never be mentioned at all.

We went inside and sat at the bar, where a man seemed to have passed out from a few too many.  I asked the bartender lady what was wrong with him.

“Ah, he’s had a rough time, he has.  His wife left ‘em for another man, and ever since, he’s been here as a regular – but sometimes it’s a little hard to get him up and sent on his way.”

She was cleaning up the mess at the bar, and then noticed my identification necklace.

“Oh, you are the reporter that everyone’s talkin’ about, aren’t ya?  What’ll ya have, Honey?  It’s on the house!”

“Thank you for your kindness,” I responded.  “Being that I’m on duty right now . . . and how I really don’t want to be in that poor fellow’s condition, an iced tea would suit me nicely.”

She gathered tea for both myself and the Fool, and we chatted as if we had known one another forever.  She revealed that she was a tarot reader, too, and that she had warned this fellow at the bar that he needed to pay more attention to his marriage, or else it could be over for him.

I decided that I would ask her my next question, since she knew just about everybody in Steampunk Land.  She happily agreed to be a part of the interview.

Velvet Angel:  How should a reader approach the Steampunk Tarot?

Five of Cups
Take a lesson from this here fella at the bar, Honey.  Don’t read the cards if you’re intoxicated by anything other than life itself.  And be careful of who ya read for, too.  If someone is into his cups too much, emotionally or otherwise, he ain’t gonna remember anything ya tell ‘em.

The Steampunk Tarot is there for ya when you have spilled cups in yer own life.  So if ya wanna see what is still there for ya in the midst of upsets, the cards will gladly show it to ya.  But ya gotta be willing to pick those standin’ cups up and move forward with ‘em.

Approach the Steampunk with a willingness to see what’s out there for ya, Honey.  You gotta decide that you ain’t gonna mope around in self-pity forever – as the likes of this poor fella’s been a doin’.

Don’t go usin’ this deck with hopes to regain what’s already lost.  It just don’t work that way.  Nobody can ever live in the past.  You only have what’s with you in this moment, and it’s what you build on to create yer future.

So approach the Steampunk with the mindset to learn how to refill yer cups with somethin’ new.  You just can’t get back what’s already gone.  Nor should ya try.

After the barmaid of the Five of Cups shared her down-to-earth wisdom, she then said, “Speakin’ of what’s already gone, some gal left her corset in me ladies room today.”  She chuckled and said, “I wonder if she’s gonna miss it.  Her loss and my gain, I say.”

“So perhaps no loss at all, then,” I said as I smiled sweetly at her.

I was surprised to see that dusk was near upon us.  Where did the time go?  There were still so many people I wanted to talk to, but I knew there would not be time.  I told the Fool that I would like to talk to just one more person before taking my leave.  I told him that I would talk briefly with the next person I encountered, and then I would have to be on my way.

We left the tavern and walked down the block and turned the corner to a church.  And then I knew who would be the next person to interview.  A man was hanging in front of a window upside down!

I approached him and asked him if he needed help.  The Fool chimed in and said that this fellow does this sort of thing often, and that I need not worry.

“But why do you want to hang upside down?  Isn’t that uncomfortable?  You remind me of the Hanged Man in the Tarot.”

The upside down man replied,  “I am representative of that card you just mentioned.  I don’t need any help at all.  I’m just viewing things from a whole new perspective.  And no, it’s not really uncomfortable at all.  This is of my own choosing.”

“Well then,” I began, “perhaps you could be so kind to answer a question for me about the Steampunk Tarot . . . unless now is not a good time for you.”

The Hanged Man assured me there was no time like the present.  I explained to him how I felt strongly attracted and connected to the Steampunk Tarot even before it was published and available to the public.

Velvet Angel:  Perhaps you, in this contemplative stance, could explain to me why I felt such a strong connection when I first learned about the Steampunk Tarot?  What drew me to you even before you were published?

The Hanged Man
That’s easy, Miss Angel. You see, you were ready to look through the eyes of Tarot from a new perspective – much like I’m doing by hanging here in a suspended fashion.

Sometimes we get stuck in life or in projects, and the only way to get unstuck is to view things from a new and unique angle.

I’m sure you’ll agree that we make up a rather unique kind of deck.  And all you needed was a unique shift in perspective.

I know you didn’t rush out to buy the Steampunk the day it hit the market.  You paused and waited before acting, and that was what we hoped you would do.  As much as you felt compelled to reach out for us, you made sure that we were what you wanted.

In fact, we also know that you sacrificed instant gratification in favor of spending some money on someone else that you love.  So when you finally allowed yourself to reach for us, the connection became all the more meaningful because of the short wait.

Those who haven’t yet reached out for us, we know the wheels may be turning as you contemplate the possibilities available by working with us.  Waiting can make the reward all the sweeter!

We offered you a different point of view as you looked through our eyes, and that connection was made.  You knew that there was something special about us, and your patient waiting for the right moment made the connection even stronger.  And now, we are here for you, and pleased to be of service.

Darkness was now upon us, and the stars shone brightly overhead in the clear skies.  With a tinge of sadness, I told the Fool that it was time for me to leave now.  He escorted me back to my time machine.

“Well, you and the citizens of Steampunk have been so good to me, and I have so enjoyed my visit.  Before I go though, Mr. Fool, would you like to ask me any questions?”

“Yes, I would, Velvet.  I thought you’d never ask!”  On behalf of myself and the entire deck, we would like to ask you this:

What have you learned from today’s adventure with Steampunk?

I took a deep breath, and began . . .

The Star
The Steampunk Tarot sets an example of being unique and being true to oneself.  It shows me that I can reach for the stars to attain what I want.  I can find peace even when things around me are in chaos.

I’ve got a true friend in the Steampunk family.  This adventure has made me feel as though I have connected to new family-like friends in my life.  I’ve loved the adventure as I’ve conversed with people in your land who are much like people in my own world.

No matter where each of us come from, we are all alike in many ways – yet we are each unique as well.  We each bring our own contributions to the world, and we should be proud of them.

I know that if I’m feeling off course in life, I can find peace with my trusty Steampunk Tarot deck – to go on a journey of self-exploration and find the answers I seek . . . answers that are often already right here within me.

I have learned to never lose hope and faith.  We are all in this life together, both strangers and those who are familiar to us.  Guidance is always available to me, whether I just need to reach inside, or whether I need to reach out to someone else if I can’t find it within myself.  There is always hope, and one should not lose sight of that.

You’ve learned a lot, Velvet, and I suspect that you already knew many of these things.  But this journey you took with me into Steampunk has served as a lovely reminder for you, wouldn’t you agree?”

“Absolutely, dear Fool.  Absolutely!”

“They checked out your time machine, and it was all fine – just made a few adjustments to ensure that your next landing won’t get off course.”

Woof, Woof!  The Fool’s little dog came to lick my hand.  He had disappeared through the day, but now he was back.  And this time, I wasn’t startled to hear the sudden barking.

“Oh, one more thing, Mr. Fool – will you see the Six of Cups girl again?  Can you find her?”

“Yes, of course. She works in one of the factories nearby the little flower shop.”

“Okay, great!”  I plopped down on the ground and began to unlace the boots – gaining a perplexed look from the Fool.  As pretty as the shoes were, these heeled boots were NOT made for walking, and my feet could attest to that.

I handed the boots to the Fool.  “Could you give these boots to her?  I think they will be her size.”

“Oh, and the kindly tavern lady from the Five of Cups . . .”  I took the necklace from the identification card.  “Could you give her this necklace?  It served its purpose nicely, but I think she deserves to have it.”

“And here, you can keep the identification card that has my picture on it.  Something to remember me by.”

“Of course, Velvet.  I will deliver your gifts tomorrow when I finish sweeping chimneys.  After taking the day off, I will have much to do tomorrow.”

I felt sad that the time had come to say good-bye, but I knew I could not put this off any longer.  I hugged the Fool and thanked him for the most amazing time I had had in such a long while.  “Fool, I will miss you most of all . . .”

And then I awoke to the sound of chirping birds outside my office window.

Ugh, apparently I fell asleep at my desk.  But what a remarkable and memorable dream I had!  The beautiful but dated dress was gone, replaced with my familiar jeans.  And on my computer screen was a story of Steampunk – my adventure in Steampunk Land . . . already posted to the blog!

“How in the world???”

And in my email was a message from the Fool that said, “Come again and visit any time you want.  Until next time, we’ll all be missing you and thinking of you!  Watch that landing on your next visit ;-)

Some things will forever remain a mystery, but one thing is for sure . . . there’s hardly ever a dull moment in the adventure of a good dream.

Today I am interviewing the Shadowscapes Tarot – a lovely work of art by Stephanie Pui-Mun Law.  The beautiful, intricate designs of this deck captivated me, and I wanted to get to know this deck a little better since it’s one of my more recent Tarot deck acquisitions.  A Tarot Deck Interview is a great way to connect with a new deck, or even to strengthen a connection with a deck you haven’t used for a while . . . or just one that you want to establish a better working relationship with.

You can do this sort of interview with your own decks, and it can be especially insightful for a brand new deck that you’ve not used yet.  Or, as mentioned, you can interview a deck that you’ve been using to get to know that deck more intimately – to bring it closer to you on a level that is personal to you and the deck.  When you do a Tarot deck interview, the responses of the cards may speak to you differently than they do for myself or others.  This is because of the personal connection that you can make with a deck on a unique and individual basis – or that you can potentially make with a particular deck.

I use a variety of interview questions for decks.  I ask what seems especially relevant to help me get better acquainted with a deck.  So from one deck interview to another, I switch things up a bit with some different questions.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

The Shadowscapes Tarot is at my desk and eager to begin the interview.  In fact, it’s been making subtle hints to me for days now, so I came up with some interesting questions to explore with the Shadowscapes.   Without further ado, we’ll begin.

Velvet Angel:  Please give me 3 keywords or phrases that describe your most important characteristics and elaborate on those.

Hmmm . . . the Nine of Swords has turned itself over.  I wonder if that is a good thing?  Can’t wait to hear what Shadowscapes has to say about this choice of card to represent the deck’s most important characteristics!

Shadowscapes Tarot: (Nine of Swords)
I have chosen descriptive keywords around the issues that are frequently brought to the Tarot – issues which I am here to assist with:  anxiety, obsessive thoughts, and feeling powerless.  And if you think about it, Velvet, I’m sure you’ve noticed that these key themes are often the reason and the basis for a seeker to come to the Tarot.

So let me explain.  I am not an anxious, powerless, or depressed deck by any means.  But seekers tend to get anxious about issues in life.  This anxiety leads to those obsessive thoughts I mentioned.  And those obsessions ultimately can leave one feeling powerless.  Our goal, as a Tarot deck, is to provide a seeker with a more empowered way to perceive and handle their difficult life issues.  We are very familiar with the sorrows and regrets that people endure, and we are here to help one find her or his wings to face the turmoil and rise above the dark night of their storms.  We do prompt one to face their issues, because we believe that looking those issues in the eye is the only way to solve them and move forward.

While it would be more ideal for seekers not to wait until their seemingly worst nightmare happens before consulting us, that’s often the typical behavior of many individuals who need answers.  And so we are there to show seekers their true power that will enable them to climb up out of their shadows and into the light once again.

“Shadowscapes, I’m quite impressed with your answer.  I have to admit that I didn’t know at first why you would choose the 9 of Swords to represent you and your characteristics . . . but it all makes sense with your explanation.  Thank you! And let’s move on to our next question now.”

Velvet Angel:  What level of experience in Tarot reading do you recommend for using the Shadowscapes Tarot deck?

Shadowscapes Tarot: (Five of Wands)
We can be a somewhat challenging deck, although not extremely complicated either.  And thus, our response gives rise to a number 5 – the midway point between beginner and advanced.  We feel that an intermediate level of experience works nicely for us.  One with some experience with traditional Tarot can handle what might seem more challenging to a Tarot newbie.

We do want seekers who work with us to be confident enough to understand us . . . and to use us as a prompt to their own intuition.  One who isn’t quite ready for us may feel a bit too scattered with our presentation.  But with a bit of experience, one can pull together our energies in a more constructive and effective manner.

However, there can certainly be divided opinions about this, and some may argue that a newcomer to the Tarot can effectively make use of us as a first Tarot deck.  We aren’t going to quibble with anyone about this.  Experience will show one the truth for each individual reader of the Tarot.  As always, we can make a recommendation and render our opinions and advice, but each individual is free to choose for himself.

Velvet Angel:  Tell me how you can be an asset to my deck collection.

Shadowscapes Tarot: (Three of Pentacles)
We hold the qualities of beauty, creativity, groundedness, and practicality – all the things we know you love to see in a deck!  We are not merely something pretty and creative to exist on a dusty shelf; we are meant to be used, loved, and appreciated for the wisdom we are more than willing to offer when asked.

If you choose to work with us regularly and really get to know us, you’ll find that we can be a “work horse” deck if you like.  But getting to that point will, of course, require us having the opportunity to really get to know one another better.  We are a deck that loves to collaborate and combine our efforts with our reader.

You’ll find that our artist, Stephanie Pui-Mun Law put a tremendous attention to detail in our creation.  So you won’t grow bored in working with us!  In fact, each time you pick us up to explore with us, you’re bound to find new things that catch your eye – even things that appear hidden at first glance.  But you can draw out all of our beauty for your own work and wisdom.  We are a deck that aims for productive energy, accomplishment, success . . . and professional growth as well.  And because you work with Tarot on a daily basis, we certainly feel more than competent to be a part of what you are creating.  We offer a combination of beauty and practical application. We’re all about creating practical results, while enjoying the process of that creation.

Velvet Angel:  Do you feel that some of the smaller details in your beautiful cards will present a limitation for readers?

Shadowscapes Tarot: (The Hermit)
That’s a great question, Velvet, and I’m happy to have the opportunity to answer it.  We’ve consulted the dear Hermit of our deck to answer this one.  The Hermit is all about one’s own truth and wisdom, so really it all comes down to a matter of personal preference and belief.  The Hermit gains wisdom through his experiences, so one cannot truly know if the smaller details in the cards will pose a problem for the long-term . . . unless they actually work with us on a regular basis and find out for themselves whether this is true for them or not.

Overall, we don’t think that it’s going to pose a problem for most readers, since a great deal of wisdom and insight is brought out from the Hermit.  The best response we can give here relates to your own soul searching and your own truth and knowledge based on your personal experience in working with us.

We’re a deck that can and should be studied and explored in order to make that connection and see the light you seek.  And if you make the connection, we don’t really foresee that connection to have any limitations imposed on it.

Velvet Angel:  How would you describe a good reading?  What makes a reading successful in your view?

Shadowscapes Tarot: (The Hierophant)
When the seeker learns something of value and is empowered to do what is necessary in his or her life, then we feel a reading has been successful.  When the seeker is open to learning something new – and not just sitting for a reading expecting to hear only what they want to hear . . . then a reading is successful.

When deep understanding has been gained, a seeker will know what to do.  He or she can make confident choices.  A seeker who gains empowerment means that a reading is successful.

Everyone is both teacher and student in life at the same time, and if one can approach the Tarot in that way, then they are on the way to having a good reading experience.

Velvet Angel:  What do you bring to the table – what are you here to teach me?

Shadowscapes Tarot: (Queen of Swords)
We are here to teach you to rely more upon yourself and your opinions than to rely so much on others around you.  We are here to teach you to see things for what they are and to tell it like it is.  Sometimes you have to be blunt.  But above all, you need to be objective about things.  So we bring your own personal experiences to the table to help you discern your current circumstances and gain a clear understanding about where you’re heading.  In order to rely on yourself, you need to have a clear view of who you are and what you want in life for yourself.

We are also here to encourage you to cut through adversity and get right to the heart of a matter when needed.  We bring truth and clarity into the light for your consideration, and our hope is that you will use that to exhibit the highest of standards in your decisions and conduct.

And when you feel that you can count on no one else, we want you to see that you always have yourself to count on . . . and us, too, of course!  We teach you how to turn the pain of the past into success for your present and future.  And while we cannot do the work for you, we can show you what you need to do with regard to a given set of circumstances that come up.  In all cases, we also lead you toward being calm, cool, and collected in your evaluations.

Velvet Angel:  What is the potential outcome of our working relationship?

Shadowscapes Tarot: (The Lovers)
Together, Velvet, we can be a passionate and inspiring team!  We feel that you and Shadowscapes are a perfect fit!  In working together, we can arrive at making good choices. We can be better in our togetherness than we could be on our own.

Our working relationship will include harmony, respect, and love for and with others in our association.  We complement one another well and can create something beautiful in our working union.

Through balanced emotions and intellect, appropriate choices can be made.  One should not choose solely with her heart, but neither should she choose only from a place of intellectual thought.  We can find a healthy balance together.

If you commit to working with us (and not just setting us on the shelf), we will also commit to you, and together we’ll find answers, solutions, and advice as needed.

Velvet Angel:  I noticed that the suit of Cups was the only card not making an appearance for this interview.  It was a card I had fully anticipated coming up. Can you comment on that?

Shadowscapes Tarot: (Five of Cups)
Here you go . . . a card from the suit of Cups.  But it’s probably not the one you wanted to see.  Am I right?

“Well, yes, you do have a point there.  The Five of Cups energy can be so sad and sorrowful.”

Every deck has its special secrets, and the suit of Cups is ours.  But what I can tell you is that we don’t want people to think only with their emotions.  People need to think with their minds, too.  If we return to the first question you asked me — with the 9 of Swords – that is an Air card, but there are obviously significant emotions attached to that anxiety we discussed.  You don’t have to tangibly see the emotional aspects to know that they’re present . . . because emotions are not so much a tangible kind of thing.

Emotions are often the most obvious and yet, at the same time, the most subtle experiences that one can have.  So you can learn the secrets of emotional management through us . . . if you so desire to do so.  We invite you to work with us and learn those secrets.  They are, after all, YOUR secrets  :)

I sincerely thank you, Shadowscapes, and I extend my deepest gratitude for such informative answers.  I honestly feel that I do know you much better now, and it’s been a genuine delight to talk with you today!

You’re welcome any time, Velvet – and we trust that we’ll be talking again very soon?

Absolutely, Shadowscapes!  In fact, I have planned for us to work together this very week in delivering the daily tarot card draws for my readers . . . er rather, for “our” readers this week!

I did an “interview” of the Faerie Tarot deck on a Saturday this past winter when there was almost two feet of snow on the ground, but as is often the case, I got busy and other things took priority.  So today I have put the final touches on this fun piece of writing to share with you.

You can do a Tarot deck interview with any of your own decks, and it can be especially insightful for a brand new deck that you’ve not used yet.  Or you can interview a deck that you’ve been using to get to know that deck more intimately – to bring it closer to you on a level that is personal to you and the deck.  When you do a Tarot deck interview, the responses of the cards may speak to you differently than they do for myself or others.  This is because of the personal connection that you can make with a deck on a unique and individual basis.

I am using a “story” approach to tell the tale of the Faerie Tarot Deck in this interview.  It tends to make things more fun and entertaining for all.  I couldn’t resist creating a story from this magical and pretty deck.  You can ask any questions you want for your own deck interviews.  I generally ask the basics, but sometimes I switch things up a bit and won’t necessarily ask all the same questions for each deck interview that I do.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Upon dialing the number I had in my book of contacts, I was hoping that someone would be in on a Saturday so I could set up an interview with the Faerie Tarot. It seemed like forever as I could hear the line ringing and ringing.  Just as I was about to give up and try again another time, someone on the other end answered.  “The Faerie Tarot World at your fingertips.  This is the Ace of Swords speaking.  How may I direct your call?”

“Oh good!  Someone is in today.  This is Velvet Angel, and I need to speak to someone about setting up an interview with the lovely Faerie Tarot.”

“Well, the timing of your request is a little bad right now . . . but it’s also good.”

“Oh boy,” I thought.  “I’m talking to someone who speaks in riddles, and he said he’s the Ace of Swords.  I would think he would be a little more direct and straightforward.  If it’s ‘bad timing,’ then how does that also make it ‘good’ timing?” I wondered to myself.

Before I could finish my fussy thoughts, the voice continued.  “Actually, Velvet, the timing is good because everyone else is pretty much tied up right now.  And this gives me an opportunity to make an executive decision of great importance.  If you could come now for the interview, I’ll be delighted to answer your questions.”

“Okay, my schedule is actually free today.  What is the address?”  (I was hoping it wouldn’t be far, because the weather was such a mess today!)

“Oh, you know the address quite well.  It’s your own address.”

“Pardon me?” I said.  I surely must have heard wrong.  It can’t be my own address!

“You heard correctly, Velvet.  It’s your own address.  Just go out back to the forest behind your yard, and I’ll be waiting there.  I’ll leave a lighted sword there so that you can easily find me in the snow.”

“Well, I don’t exactly have a forest behind my house, but it is a woodsy area.”

“Forest, woods, trees.  Whatever you prefer to call it.  It’s the same thing.  Will you be there?”

“Yes, I will, thank you.  But you know, you are quite welcome to come inside my house where it’s warm.  It’s only above freezing today, so it’s quite cold.”

“No thank you, Velvet.  We faerie beings enjoy all the seasons that nature brings.  And by the way, I’ll be the white rabbit.  I blend with the snow, but you’ll see me right next to the lighted sword.”  And then the phone clicked, and I knew I better get a move on.

I felt quite curious – sort of like Alice in Wonderland might feel perhaps.  But let’s hope there won’t be any unexpected rabbit holes to fall in to!  I’ll certainly be on my guard for that!

I grabbed my coat and notepad and headed outside and around the corner to the back yard.  And sure enough, just beyond the fence, I could see the lighted sword.  It made sense for the rabbit to choose a place outside of the fence, rather than inside, as I knew the dogs would probably be quite a pest and bother to him.  As I drew closer, I got my first glimpse of the white rabbit.  How cute, I thought.  And a talking rabbit at that!  And I don’t even feel one bit cold, I noticed.

The rabbit spoke, “I’m ready whenever you are.  Please ask what you would like to know, and I’ll be honored to share with you.  Oh, and by the way . . . it’s okay for you to step a bit closer.  You won’t fall into any rabbit holes.”

“Oh, so he’s a mind reader, is he?”  I thought.  “Well okay then, Ace of Swords, or Mr. Rabbit, we’ll get started,” I said.  I wanted to ask him how he knew of my thoughts about a rabbit hole . . . but I decided that some things are best left as a mystery in a world where strange things can and do happen, even though “strange” is not necessarily bad, but it’s just “interestingly different” sometimes.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Velvet Angel:  Why do you feel that you are a good representative of the Faerie Tarot deck?  Why would you choose yourself to represent this deck, as I know that you have indeed made that “executive decision” to interview with me today.

Well, outside of others being quite busy today, there is a larger purpose that makes absolute sense for me to interview with you on this special day.  Being the Ace of Swords, I personally represent beginnings and communication, as well as opportunity and potential.  The season that I feature is winter.  And here we are in the middle of winter with snow on the ground, right outside your own back door.  This is also a new beginning for you, too, as you want to get to know the Faerie Tarot and are exploring us for your first time.  You’re using your head to explore and not just your heart, which I think is an admirable thing to do.

I couldn’t resist taking the initiative to make that “executive decision” without the boss’s okay.  But I know he’ll be pleased upon learning that it’s a successful interview that we shall have.

And please allow me to share with you what is written in our little white book, as I think it will provide you with more clarity as to why I am the one to represent the Faerie Tarot deck:

“The sword planted in the ground is the emblem of victory and conquest.  The sword defies time, the winds and spirits.  The bearer will be able to conclude any project.  The sun illuminating its pommel reflects its energy, strength, and power.  The snow rabbit – ‘that’s me’ – posted at its side is a vigilant guard.”

”The rabbit has confidence,” I thought to myself.  “I like him already, even if I had a doubt or two earlier.  He seems to exude a certain power about him, even for being such a small creature.  He actually is direct and to the point, just as the Ace of Swords would be.  Apparently he just wants to make me ‘think’ about things.  He’s direct in his own way.”

“Thank you, Mr. Rabbit, er . . . Ace of Swords,” I answered.  “I can see that you do represent the power of your deck, and I think you are indeed a fitting choice.  I’m so glad it worked out that you were available to talk with me today on such short notice.”

Velvet Angel:  Tell me about yourself.  What are your characteristics?

Faerie Tarot: (Justice)
I speak on behalf of the entire Faerie Tarot world.  Justice would be the perfect spokesperson for this question, but since she is not present, I will speak for her as well as for the entire deck.

We are truthful, fair, and unbiased in our dealings.  We know there are always two sides to every story, and we strive to uncover the truth.  We are accessible to anyone of any age.  We help our seekers find their balance in life.  We encourage choices to be made that are for the good of all.  We remind all of the consequences of their choices as well.  And thus, we promote the willingness within seekers to make their choices wisely and to judge themselves and live by the principles of Justice – whom we refer to as the “keeper of morality” in the faerie world. We are a deck that believes in Karma – and what you reap, so shall you sow.

Anyone can choose to lie if they wish, but we will know the truth from a lie any day.  So even if one lies about a situation and goes into a reading with that lie, the answers revealed will reflect the untrue things that one is saying or even thinking.  Our answers will be based on the truth.  We believe that each person is rewarded or punished accordingly for their actions . . . whether it seems fair or not.  That is what Justice is about, after all.  It’s about finding the truth and facing the consequences, whether such consequences come in the form of punishment or reward. We don’t punish or give out rewards, but the Universe does.  So we want everyone to be honest and truthful with us and with themselves.  And when they are, they will get solid results from the Faerie Tarot.  Karma is something we believe in and do not take lightly.

Thus, we are fair.  Our judgements are not based on any bias or prejudice.  We won’t judge you or others wrongfully.  We take an objective approach to listen to all sides of a story or situation, and then after hearing you out, we are eager to render our verdict.

Velvet Angel:  What are your strengths?

Faerie Tarot: (Reversed 10 of Pentacles)
It’s actually the downtrodden souls who seem to have lost their meaning in life that tend to bring out our strengths as a deck.  We see people who are just going through the motions in life without a lot of enthusiasm.  Seekers who are at a low point in life will often turn to us for answers, and we are more than willing to show them the answers and some options for turning things around to access the abundance that is there for them.  But we do make it clear that sometimes the abundance that one needs is not material as they may initially believe.  If one can tap into their emotional and spiritual abundance first, then the material abundance can naturally follow suit.

We’ve noticed how people are quicker to turn to the tarot when life presents problems.  It’s not as often that people will seek a reading when life is going oh-so-fine.  But when seekers do turn to us, we gently guide them into finding the direction that is right for them.  We show them how restlessness and impatience can also lead to reckless decisions.  We offer the wisdom to prevent those sad or lost souls from taking risks that they would later regret.  Those who seem to be up against “bad luck” will usually find that they have created that situation through the choices they have made . . . and there are better choices that can be made instead.

Additionally, we point out the blessings that people are not seeing because of some problem or despair they are facing in their lives.  One must acknowledge the blessings they already have in order to bring more abundance to them.  And so our ultimate strength involves helping people turn a difficult situation around into something better.  The process is not always easy, but we are a gentle guide that will lend a compassionate ear and strong guidance as needed.

Velvet Angel:  What are your limitations as a Tarot deck?

Faerie Tarot: (The Hermit)
Pause . . . pause . . . pause.  Hmmm, the Faerie Tarot really seems to be pausing on this one.  But then again, it’s not the most favored question of decks.  I’ll give it a moment and allow the representative of this deck to compose himself and choose his response.

Finally, the deck once again speaks . . . very slowly and concisely with a serious demeanor.

When one thinks of a “hermit,” they often visualize a lonely old soul who isolates himself, and they fail to see the true wisdom of the Hermit – wisdom and truth that belongs to an individual, versus what is learned from society.  And so sadly, our limitations exist in the perceptions of potential seekers who might overlook us as a viable tarot deck to receive answers from.  People either don’t see what they believe in, or they ignore it purposefully.  They have problems tapping into their own wisdom and truths.

Because we can’t actually verbalize our answers to a seeker, people can get frustrated. But then again, I suppose that is typical of almost any deck for which a seeker is in too much of a hurry to go within for answers that are there, just waiting to be discovered and explored.  The tone of “cuteness” or “whimsical” may come to mind for the serious seeker who thinks we couldn’t possibly do justice for their concerns in a reading.  But we do hold the light of wisdom and can shed that light on the wisdom of each individual seeker . . . if we are given the chance to do so.

We don’t want to be the stereotypical “lonely” deck that gets overlooked – not when we have so much to offer.  We are not truly so much different than many other decks available.  In fact, we can actually be perceived as softer, gentler, and more fun for those who will open their minds and hearts to us.

We can handle the serious side of life quite well, but it seems that not many people know about us, or they simply overlook us for something else.  We are treated like a recluse or a “hermit” in the way that people perceive those types of souls . . . and if only they knew that there is so much more than meets the eye . . . so much more that goes beyond such bias.

We urge seekers to take time for inner focus and self-reflection, but often people in today’s society are in such a big hurry that they can’t slow down long enough to take in our value.  Who wants to take time for soul searching when they have a million things they feel they have to rush toward in a material world?  That is truly a shame.  But we can’t scream out for users to choose us for a reading . . . as much as we would love to do just that!  It’s always a choice within each individual as to what direction they will decide upon.  Lessons in life cannot be rushed or made to happen before it is time for them – no matter how much some people might wish it were so in a fast-paced world that we live in.  Simply reading about lessons or experiences, or hearing about them, will not give one the true “experience” of the lesson. People want fast answers, and we certainly cannot promise fast answers for anything – not when a lot of inner work and focus is required first.  Knowledge becomes wisdom when we earn it through our own experiences.  And that wisdom helps us to light a path to the future we desire.  If only more seekers would give us a real chance to show them this light . . . how happy that would make us!

We don’t want to keep the light of our wisdom all to ourselves!  We want to teach it and share it with others.  And we want to help others find their light within.  But sometimes we are the “lone wolf” deck, passed over for something else or passed over for that “new and better” deck that just hit the market.  (…Sigh…) However, we also know that when the student is ready, the teacher will appear . . . and when we get the opportunity to be a teacher to the student who is finally ready to meet us, that gives us great joy!

Velvet Angel:  What do you bring to the table — what are you here to teach?

Faerie Tarot: (King of Cups)
We are here to lend a compassionate ear and to help solve problems by evaluating the emotions and reactions that one might typically have.  We are gentle and kind, but we also carry age-old wisdom within our soul.  We offer sensitive support and understanding for those who dare to explore with us.  We are not a frightening deck in any way, and thus we are available to all kinds of seekers.  Our door is open to all who knock.

We are full of amazing hidden mysteries, intuition, love, and emotion.  We strive to teach people not to separate themselves from their emotions, for when they do, they are only trapping and holding themselves back.

Our lessons are those of love, compassion, and emotional maturity.  We want to help people love their lives more – and love the things they do and the people they associate with.  We want people to show their compassionate side to others . . . and to themselves.  People can be much too hard on themselves, and we ask that they slow down and process their emotions.  Acknowledge what you feel.  Understand who you really are.  Gentle compassion will win over harshness in just about any situation – and that includes how you act toward yourself.  Through exploration of the emotional self, we teach kindness, fairness, generosity, and love . . . with the hope that each person can be the best at what they most love to do as well as being the best at just being themselves.

Velvet Angel:  You seem like such a fun deck in looking at all these lovely, whimsical images.  How do you advise people to approach you?

Faerie Tarot: (9 of Swords)
As mentioned before, a lot of people wait until they are in the grips of some kind of anguish, anxiety, pain, fear, or regret before they will turn to us.  We would love to see people approach us more objectively and with a willingness to find the ladder in which they can climb out of the mess they find themselves in.  We can be that ladder of knowledge, and we can show seekers that sometimes they are doing a lot of needless worry.  Worry solves nothing in the first place. But additionally, obsessive thoughts that roam through one’s minds are not always based on realistic thinking.  People also have a way of making mountains out of molehills.  Seek our knowledge from a calm state of mind with the hope that you are not as trapped as your situation might suggest to you.

Yes, we can certainly be a fun deck, but unfortunately, a lot of people wait until life isn’t so fun before they are willing to consult with us.  They will likely enjoy us far less than if they would seek us before big problems come calling – possibly even learning something to help them prevent the big hardship in the first place!

However, we are certainly not ones to turn away the worried folks.  We’ll be there for everyone who asks.  But what we would really like to see in people’s approach is for them to turn away from the drama and look into their situations with us from a more objective frame of mind.  Until they are willing to do that, they are simply not likely to get useful answers from us – or from any deck for that matter!

If people would be willing to at least slightly alter their thinking, they can gain a new perspective.  With a little bit of calm in the mix, things can sink in so that seekers are able to take the required action to change their situations to an improved state.  Don’t wait for your worst nightmare to happen before consulting with us . . . talk to us sooner!

Velvet Angel:  How can we best work together?

Faerie Tarot: (3 of Wands)
Our work together can be very worthwhile, as we are about progress toward the accomplishment of anything that has value.  We appreciate the chance to form alliances with those whose talents, abilities, experience, and efforts can help others advance in appreciable ways.

We are naturally passionate about the knowledge of tarot –  since we are indeed a real tarot deck – and we know that you share that passion with us wholeheartedly.  That makes for a great team that can set those ships to sail and see them return with rewards.

We can work well together through cooperation and teamwork where everyone contributes.  So please don’t forget us on a lonely shelf. Do bring us out to work with you from time to time, and together we can deliver some results to feel proud of.  Together, we can cover more horizons than one might think!

Stability and determination, in addition to creativity, will get us far through the leaps and bounds that we take together.  Let’s offer our support to others and allow success to reign in the lives of as many people we can touch . . . including that of your own.  Ensure that your talents always find an expression, and don’t be afraid to take the risk to venture out . . . because we are in favor of doing just that!  We believe that there is nothing to lose, but everything to gain as we look at the big picture of life!

Velvet Angel:  I noticed that you have brought something from all of the suits, including the major arcana of the Tarot, which I like to see, as not all decks I interview choose to do this.  Can you comment on your choice to include all of these elements for this interview?

Faerie Tarot: (The Empress)
It’s true that some decks might withhold their best kept secrets, which is fine for some decks to do.  They have their special reasons for doing it, and we are certainly not going to sit in judgment about what other decks do or don’t do.  For us, however, we feel that all the elements being brought forth to the table portray our complete openness to you as well as the balance that we promote in people’s lives.

Because some might blow us off as just another “cute little deck,” we do bring everything we have to the table and reveal it all up front.  It is our hope by doing this that more people will see the value and the wisdom that we have to share – including helping others to tap into their very own intuitive wisdom!

While we can and do bring the fun back into tarot readings, we aren’t without practical wisdom and guidance.  We are more than just a cute, whimsical deck.  But we are also good at nurturing with compassion for the seeker who has troublesome issues to deal with.  Nurturing through balance, love, and compassion is a big part of what we’re all about, and it’s what we also teach.  And thus, we chose to reveal it all and put everything on the table for your consideration.

“So . . .”  said the Ace of Swords, “Do we get the job?”

“Hmmmm?” I murmured as I was writing down some notes in my notebook.  I then looked up at the white rabbit, “What job?”

“The job as your tarot deck, of course,” the rabbit replies matter-of-factly.

“Oh.” I said.  “Well, actually you’ve had the job all along, but I wanted to get to know you better, and an interview is a great way to do that.  You’ll have a place among all of my many other treasured tarot collections, and indeed, I will not allow you to sit and collect dust.  I can assure you that the lovely Faerie Tarot will get their turn in my sacred reading space.”

“Thank you, Ace of Swords, for such an enlightening interview with me today!”

“And thank YOU, Velvet, for giving me this grand opportunity to reveal to you and hopefully others what the magical Tarot Faerie is all about.”

I turned away to head back into the house.  I decided to take one quick glimpse back, and the rabbit and his lighted sword were gone . . . and so were my tracks in the snow that had led up to the place where I had spoken to the rabbit just a moment before.  It was as if all of this was only a figment of my imagination.  “Hmmmm . . . .” I pondered, as I headed on to the house.  “Life just gets curiouser and curiouser, doesn’t it?”

The Mystic Dreamer Tarot is a deck that I purchased in December 2009 – just over a year ago from the time of this writing.  It tends to take me awhile to find the time to really delve into a new deck and explore on a level that goes beyond just the surface.  This was also a deck that I had quite a debate with myself about buying.  But after seeing how many others were enjoying the Mystic Dreamer Tarot, I decided to purchase it.  And I’m glad that I did – even though I wish I would have explored it sooner.  But nevertheless, here we are now to interview the lovely and mystical Mystic Dreamer Tarot.

You can do this sort of interview with your own decks, and it can be especially insightful for a brand new deck that you’ve not used yet.  Or you can interview a deck that you’ve been using to get to know that deck more intimately – to bring it closer to you on a level that is personal to you and the deck.  When you do a Tarot deck interview, the responses of the cards may speak to you differently than they do for myself or others.  This is because of the personal connection that you can make with a deck on a unique and individual basis – or that you can potentially make with a particular deck.

I am using a “story” approach to tell the tale of the Mystic Tarot Deck in this interview.  It tends to make things more fun and entertaining for all.  You can ask any questions you want for your deck interviews.  I generally ask the basics, but sometimes I switch things up a bit and won’t necessarily ask all the same questions for each interview that I do.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

What a long day it’s been, but tomorrow should be exciting, as the Mystic Dreamer Tarot agreed to do an interview with me!  I can hardly wait. But for now, I must get some sleep so I’ll be alert for this important Tarot Deck Interview.  Soon, I’m cozy and fast asleep, snug as a bug in a rug – as the saying goes. Before I know it, I’ve awakened to a peaceful, light misty fog surrounding me – although it is a bit startling, too.  “Is it morning already?” I wonder to myself as I rub my eyes, stretch, and yawn.  Wait a minute?  Where am I?  “OMG, am I dead!?”  I asked aloud in wonderment, surprise, worry, and confusion all rolled into one emotion of the moment.

Just as my alarm was getting the best of me, a woman approached and said, “It’s okay.  Just relax!  I’m the 4 of Swords and will be representing the Mystic Dreamer Tarot for our interview today.  You did remember our interview, didn’t you, Velvet?” “Oh, but of course,” I replied.  “However, I thought you were coming to my home . . . and it seems I’ve come to yours instead?  I guess I’m a bit disoriented at the moment.” “I must be dreaming, and it’s not really tomorrow yet,” I decided.

“Oh, but tomorrow is already here, Velvet,” the kind lady said as she lead me to a pair of comfortable chairs.  “I’m so excited to represent the Mystic Tarot deck for this interview.  As the Four of Swords, you know, it’s not often I get to take action on this sort of opportunity.  I brought you here, and you are safe.  I wanted you to see our world with your own eyes and through your own experience.  But please relax and get comfortable.  As you know, I’m not one who gets overly excited or worried about things.  I am the Four of Swords after all.  Let’s just put our fears to rest and enjoy getting acquainted, shall we?” “Of course, Miss Four of Swords.”  After a brief pause, I asked, “What should I call you?”

“Miss Four of Swords is just fine with me, Velvet.  Let’s sit down here and chat.  What would you like to ask me?”  While I had a number of questions I wanted to ask – foremost the questions of what was happening and how did I arrive in this odd but magical place that seemed too real to merely be a dream – I could see that Miss Four of Swords was ready to begin the interview.  So I collected my wits and masked the confusion with the intention to be as professional as I could under these strangely enticing circumstances.  I sat down with Miss Four of Swords to begin our interview.

Velvet Angel:  Tell me about yourself.  What are your characteristics?

Mystic Dreamer Tarot: (King of Pentacles)
I speak on behalf of the entire Mystic Dreamer Tarot.  We are reliable, loyal, and committed.  People trust us, because we have earned their trust and respect . . . along with a good reputation, I might add.  We tend to be practical, grounded, and supportive.  We encourage dedication in others, and we show others through example how to gain access to their empire of choice.  What people want in life will vary from person to person.  But when people seek stability in their lives, we are there to show the way.

We’re a very patient deck, and we have met with success and popularity in our career as a Tarot deck.  We are considered wise, generous, and resourceful.  While we can assist others in establishing strong financial foundations and good money management, we are not materialistic in nature, nor do we promote that.

We are trustworthy.  People who have explored with us find that they can trust the words of wisdom and advice that we share so generously.  We believe in providing reliable guidance for others, and we like to keep things practical.  Having said that, most people associate “practical” with “boring,” and I can assure you that we’re anything but boring.  Would you agree with that statement so far, Velvet?

As I looked around at the strange, but calm surroundings, I certainly couldn’t disagree.  I replied, “Yes, Miss Four of Swords.  I certainly don’t find anything boring about this experience – strange or different in a mysterious sort of way perhaps, but far from being boring!”

We promote responsible leadership in others, and cutting corners is never a part of what we teach!  It’s honesty, efficiency, and practicality that will get one further in life on the road of success.  We are known for having a strong character, and some say that our word is as good as gold.  At least, it’s certainly as valuable.

Perhaps those who prefer to associate the concept of being practical, boring, or dull are the ones who cannot see our preference for old ways of thinking and acting.  We like to adhere to tradition and what has proven to work.  This is not to say that we won’t encourage one to learn new things, because certainly we will indeed.  But we also like the tried and proven approaches that have continued to work in the world of Tarot. It’s much like a reader who has her own preferred method of reading the cards.  Her method works for her, and while she’s open to learning new things, she won’t discard the value of “old school” traditions that have served her very well.  This is how we are as a deck.

Oh, and Velvet, in case you were worried that we, the cards, might be upset with you for leaving us on a shelf in our box for a year . . . I wanted to assure you that the Mystic Dreamer Tarot isn’t one that easily gets angry.  We are quite patient and forgiving, and we knew you would eventually get around to exploring with us.

(At that point, I was hoping it was merely an innocent comment  – and not a jab at my neglectful ways.  I merely nodded and said a simple “Thanks” to Miss Four of Swords.)

Velvet Angel:  What are your strengths?

Mystic Dreamer Tarot: (Six of Cups)
I absolutely love to talk about our most special strength, so I’m glad that you asked, Velvet.  As a Tarot deck, we have to have a lot in the way of strong qualities, but perhaps my favorite of our strengths is in how we can take a walk with a seeker down memory lane.  It’s amazing what one can learn by revisiting the past.  There may be previous lessons not yet acknowledged . . . and sometimes a much needed answers can be found there as well.  We help seekers remember what they need to recall.  Sometimes this revisit to the past also helps a seeker find long overdue closure on an issue as well.

We love to share our wisdom with others.  Caring, sharing, compassion, and love are at the heart of our existence.  But it all does begin with self-love, too . . . the prerequisite to one being able to love and share with others.  We might go about our work in a way that is different than others, but we do value unique individuality in people.

As we help each seeker to explore the past and come to terms with the present, individuals are also connected to their intuitive capabilities through emotional exploration.  If you look around you and look to the cards, you can enjoy a dreamy kind of feeling that opens one to the path of deeper exploration that can be based on dreams, memories, or the intuition.  It’s actually a very comfortable feeling – nothing creepy there at all.  We help our seekers find answers for the present and future by reflecting upon the past.

Velvet Angel:  What are your limitations as a Tarot deck?

Mystic Dreamer Tarot: (Seven of Cups)
The dreamy nature of our existence can contain aspects of fantasy and wishful thinking that tend to make a person hold on to pie-in-the sky dreams.  If one discovers their options, they may find it hard to choose, or they may think that just because we show them alternatives that can actually be favorable, they think they don’t have to lift a finger to make any of it happen. They just keep dreaming.  And when that happens, we are saddened, because we question whether we did our job or not.  But then we also realize that choice belongs to each individual.  And it’s what one chooses do with their options and opportunities that creates the end result.  The part we play is in presenting options, but it’s up to each seeker to choose for themselves – AND do the work that is necessary to create the most desirable outcome.  We can’t do that part for anyone, but sadly some seekers sit back and let life happen to them instead of directing their lives and their choices appropriately.  We show you the dreams and the possibilities, but at some point, one must come out of the dream state and return to reality in order to manifest what they want.

For the overly dreamy and impractical souls, our words may fall on deaf ears.  We also prefer that people clearly define their questions to us.  If people simply ask, “How is my love life doing,” all of us cards look at each other and then ask silently, “You mean, you don’t know?  You have no clue how your love life is doing?”  Rhetorical questions can give rise to rhetorical answers.  We certainly want everyone to have fun with a Tarot reading, but when we’re the deck of choice, we do want people to ask serious questions that they really want answers to. We want folks to get clear on what they want to know, so that the answers we supply will also be clear.  It’s not our desire to reinforce a sense of wandering in someone who is already confused or scattered.  But we can bring up some hard choices for one to make.  Not everyone is willing to face that.

Daydreams, fantasies, and imagination are the raw materials to create something of value, but eventually that “moment of truth” arrives, and one has to create something real from their visions.  Although dreaming is fun to indulge in and can be an aspiration for action, at some point it is necessary for a seeker to abandon their “castles in the sky” and actually being to build those castle in real life.  It all begins with a choice, and we cannot make choices for anyone, nor can we take the necessary action to manifest one’s most desired dream.

Velvet Angel:  What is the quality you hold that drew me to you?

Mystic Dreamer Tarot: (2 of Wands)
Partnership, planning, and exploration are the goals that precede the action. That is why you also had to think a bit before bringing us into your world – something that we, as the Mystic Tarot, can truly respect in you and others.  We welcomed you, and you could feel this.  Our mystical qualities drew you in like an invitation you finally couldn’t refuse.  You felt the desire to connect and be on a team, or at least to allow us to be a part of your team.  Your ability to make good choices before taking an action was a prominent quality in the process of us uniting.  And you were always the one who maintained the control in the situation.  You could have declined our invitation, but you also felt you would be turning down a valuable opportunity.  We spoke to your feelings of curiosity while you weighed your options. We knew there were hundreds of other decks you could have chosen instead.  So we waited while you considered us.  And in the meantime, we weighed upon your mind as you took your time to think about this offer.

Ultimately, the partnership came into being.  You allowed it to happen, and we are indeed grateful and foresee many years of positive collaboration between us.  We saw things and allowed you to see through comparison of other people’s opinions of us.  But ultimately, you came to your own conclusions as you weighed the options before you.  You made your own choice – something we can truly respect.

Velvet Angel:  What do you bring to the table — what are you here to teach me?

Mystic Dreamer Tarot: (8 of Pentacles)
We know you are no rookie when it comes to the Tarot. But one is never too young or too old to learn something new and add to their repertoire of skills.  We hope to teach you something new in our association, but as mentioned earlier, we can be rather “old school” in our methods, just as you can be at times, too.  But the beauty of your experience lies in the fact that you love to learn new things.  You love to work with new things . . . and our association only stands to become stronger through time.  We are here to help you create results that are pleasing.  Professional accomplishment is always the goal that you strive for, and we can certainly help you in that worthy goal.

We can be like a “mentor” if you will.  We can teach you a few new tricks as you explore with us.  We can show you things that you might have overlooked from other decks.  Something new tends to turn up when you use a new and different deck.  While we won’t stray significantly from traditions that work, we’ll let you stretch just enough so that you can study and learn with us.  Mastery is a big goal, but we do bring those potentials to the table. But we also want to emphasize that even mastery is not without opportunities to learn something new. The greatest masters of history could still learn things of value and apply those skills for the betterment of themselves and others. And those are the lessons and experiences we offer you as well.

We are here to teach you to pay attention to certain details that you might normally miss or overlook.  That is easy to do when things start becoming routine and feel very natural to you.  But we will serve as your reminder to always go the extra mile and make what is already good into something even more magnificent.  Tarot education never stops.  As you know, it’s a lifelong journey . . . but one that can be incredibly fulfilling, too!  With the Tarot, you get permission to be that “perpetual student.”  We are here to help you challenge yourself to improve upon something you already know how to do well.  We are here to help you enhance what you have created in your life so far and to always encourage you to be both student and teacher in life . . . and with the Tarot.

Velvet Angel:  How can we best work together?

Mystic Dreamer Tarot: (Ace of Pentacles)
Sometimes the most practical approach in a journey is to step back to a beginner’s mind – which works quite nicely in the world of Tarot, I might add.  Walk down this path of new beginnings with us and explore the gates beyond.  A new richness awaits both of us in working together.  We are always in support of you and your accomplishments.

The abundance of the good things in life – and in success – is out there to explore.  Think of us as your practical companion and guide.  And look to us as a safe haven, offering you a safe and comfortable environment in which to explore.

Be willing to always grow, for one never stops finding opportunities in life to continually learn and grow!  This is the basis of our foundation for continual development.  Something new exists between us that wasn’t there before . . . and this “seed” holds the potential for all the things that can eventually come into being.

Enter the world of dreams with us, and feel free to daydream . . . but also, don’t forget to come back into reality and practically apply what you have learned from those dreams.

Velvet Angel:  I noticed that you have not brought out any cards from the major arcana during this interview.  Can you comment on that?

Absolutely! Some Tarot decks, like us, have adopted the belief and practice that revolves around the daily events of life leading up to the bigger, major life events. Big things usually don’t “just happen.” Various things from day-to-day life create those larger events. But in our work together, we will certainly have reasons to show you and/or your clients major arcana cards to explore the bigger things that are being created, built, or that are growing. For now, we offer you the picture of the smaller daily events to give you a glimpse of who we are and how we can work together. The bigger themes await you when you choose to work with us. We cannot pour out all of our secrets at once . . . but those secrets will be revealed in the right time.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

“Miss Four of Swords, I thank you so sincerely for answering these questions for me. Your responses have been extremely enlightening for me, and I really feel that I know you quite well now.” After a pause, I finally got brave enough to ask “Where exactly are we, may I ask?”

She replied, “Why, you’re in the land of Mystic Dreams, of course!”

“Oh . . . yes. Yes, of course,” I responded with some surprise and perhaps a bit of doubt in my tone.

I opened my eyes with a yawn and a stretch . . . and recalled the most vivid dream I had ever had. I dreamed of interviewing in a dreamy, mystical place with the Four of Swords – the Land of Mystic Dreams, I recalled. Wow, I guess my imagination must be running wild lately, I thought to myself. It’s probably time to think about taking that vacation I keep putting off. That interview is this afternoon, and I should call and confirm our appointment.

In looking over to the phone, I saw that I had a message. How odd, I thought. I must not have heard the phone ring. I walked over and pressed the message play button and heard . . . “Velvet, this is Miss Four of Swords, and I wanted to call and personally thank you for sharing your time for the lovely interview. I hope you learned a lot about us, as the Mystic Dreamer Tarot that we are. Thank you, Velvet! Have a glorious and mystic dream-filled day, and may your special dreams come true for you!”

At that moment, I decided I definitely needed a loooooong vacation :) Yep, that dream is definitely in the cards for me!

Happy Tarot Journeys!

While I normally do deck interviews strictly by the interview information itself which I obtain from the cards drawn, I have so enjoyed the fun way that Helen – from Tarot Notes – Major and Minor – does them.  She has inspired me to try my own hand at storytelling, which makes things so much more interesting –  and entertaining!

While I don’t think I can be quite the creative gal that my friend Helen is . . . she has certainly been a lovely inspiration, so I’ll give it my best.  One of the things I absolutely love about being a part of a Tarot community is the things that we can share and learn from each other.  We are gifted whether we are in “sharing/teaching mode” or in “receiving/student mode” when it comes to the world of Tarot.

Helen has inspired me, through her examples, to stretch my creativity, lighten up, and have absolute fun with whatever I’m doing :)   I encourage you to visit Helen’s and Zanna’s Tarot Notes – Major and Minor blog . . . as well as Helen’s website called Helen Scribbles where she shares snippets of her creative writing.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Today I have invited the Anna.K Tarot to my home for a Tarot Deck Interview.  My copy of the Anna.K Tarot deck tells me that it’s the 5 of Rods who will be coming to represent the deck.  Now why on earth would they choose that card among all the others?  Oh wait, I just got a text message from the Anna.K Tarot.  Let me see what they have to say.

They said they are sending over eight individuals to interview with me – and a CAT!  They chose this card as their representative, because the others all busy doing their Christmas shopping.  Oh dear, they are shopping for presents during a Mercury Retrograde?  No wonder they are sending such a competitive type of personality to do this interview.  Oh well, I’m sure we’ll make the best of it.  Surely they will be on their best behavior for the interview.

I just hadn’t counted on providing food and refreshments for eight people, though – and a cat!  I don’t have any cat food.  I wonder if cats like dog food?  Or are they truly as finicky as all those television commercials portray them to be?  Oh well, if cats are anything like dogs, they’ll eat just about anything that doesn’t eat them first.  I have these simple sandwiches I made up, so I hope that will do for everyone.  (And I hope my dogs get along with the kitty!)

Oh, the people from the 5 of Rods are walking up into my driveway now!  I better get myself to the door.  I see the cat is with them, too!  It’s terribly cold outside today.  I wonder why they are all walking?  Well, at least they seem to have some mugs of warm drink to keep them warm . . . or dare I wonder – are those mugs of beer?

As I open the door, I hear them talking loudly.  (“My, I do hope they didn’t come to the interview in an intoxicated state,” I thought to myself.)  Just then, one of the ladies must have noticed my look of concern. She said, “Don’t worry, Dear!  You’ll have to forgive the boys here.  They do tend to get a little loud and rowdy at times.  Could we sit at your kitchen table so the boys can arm wrestle?”

(“Arm wrestle?”  I thought to myself.  And during an important interview at that!)  I put on my best face to mask my shock and told them, “Of course, come right this way.”  I led them into the kitchen and then quickly moved my tablecloth and centerpieces from the table to prevent any possible breakages.  I simply had no idea how we were going to conduct an interview with arm wrestling in process.  I offered to get some more chairs so that everyone could sit down, but most of the people in this group chose to stand and observe.

“Would you all care to have some sandwiches?” I asked them.  “No thank you,” they all answered in unison.  “But if you don’t mind, ma’am, our cat might like a sandwich,” one of the rough looking fellows suggested.  (Okay, so that is what the cat will eat.)

“To which of you eight dear people should I address my questions?” I asked of the group.

“That would be me, ma’am,” replied one of the fellows who was arm wrestling.  “Just don’t mind me and my brother here.  I promise I won’t disappoint you – nor will I disappoint my family that we come to represent for this interview.  I’ll give you honest answers, even when I’m engaged in what I do best!”

“Well okay then,” I hesitantly replied.  “Let’s begin.”

Velvet Angel:  Tell me about yourself.  What are your characteristics?

Anna.K Tarot: (The Hanged Man)

I encourage those who seek me to pause and remain still so that the knowledge I impart will have a chance to sink in.  I bring new ideas and perspectives, but I don’t force my wisdom on anyone.  Each person must make a choice to hold still for a bit – or to rush forward.  I don’t impose myself on anyone, but those who seek me shall be enlightened.  And thus, my wisdom will light the paths of those who voluntarily let go for a bit and just relax.  My wisdom may fall on deaf ears for those who cannot make the voluntary sacrifice to pause, wait, be patient, and listen.  But for those who will truly listen, they shall be enlightened.  I’m not a busy deck.  I don’t try to rush around or impose my values upon others.  I simply bring truth, awareness, and answers to seekers.

Sometimes it is from a difficult or painful experience where truth and answers come forth.  And one of my special characteristics is in pointing out that wisdom.  Yet after the difficulty, a “time out” makes one stronger.  One of the lessons I teach is that sometimes you gain control through letting go.  Sometimes you “win” by surrendering.  The surrender may involve certain outlooks, beliefs, or perceptions . . . or it may involve letting go and surrendering fears or issues of the past. But whatever it may be for each individual, I’m here to point that out.

(“Well, this is going surprisingly well,” I thought to myself.  “Hmmm, but it sure doesn’t look like this fellow and his brother are surrendering the arm wrestling battle!”)

Velvet Angel:  What are your strengths?

Anna.K Tarot: (Page of Rods)

In addition to the general characteristics noted above, I encourage seekers to be curious and open to new ideas and methods. I can take you back to the right level of childhood innocence to explore a situation through new eyes – helping you drop judgements, bias, or prejudices.  In this way, you can learn something of real value in a reading.  I work best with those who have an open mind and whose curious minds really want an answer.  Once you are able to see through to new ideas, you are also better prepared to take action on that which you desire or need.  I can lead you from a beginner into a seasoned adventurer in life.  But it always comes from within YOU – I am merely your guide or your map.

Look beyond the surface of things, including what goes deeper than just the surface of yourself or others.  We are all students in this big event called “life,” and there is always something to learn.  I will help you connect with your lessons in life.  I will open your curious mind so that you can explore.

(“Aha!” I thought to myself.  “This makes perfect sense for them to send the Five of Rods to the interview.  I merely needed to get past my shock for this, and see the value of what these ‘arm wrestling interviewees’ have to share!  This certainly does go with the saying that we cannot judge a book by its cover, and that there is more than meets the eye.  Now I’m very fascinated and eager to hear what else this deck has to say, and I cannot wait to ask the next question – one that many decks don’t much like to answer.”)

Velvet Angel:  What are your limitations as a Tarot deck?

Anna.K Tarot: (10 of Swords)

Without a moment’s hesitation (and without interruption in the arm wrestling process which neither party seems to be winning), one of the fellows responds to my question.

For those who don’t wish to face their fears, they may not appreciate the bluntness of my messages when I see the need to be direct and frank.  So my limitations exist within the mind and perceptions of the user.  It goes back to my general characteristics with the Hanged Man’s energy and the perceptions and outlooks that one holds – or that one is willing to embrace.  There can be sacrifices in endings, but such sacrifices (even the painful ones) are necessary to find closure and move on to a new beginning.

Thus, like some decks, I don’t have a lot of patience for those who wish to be the martyr or hold to a “woe is me; feel sorry for me” sort of attitude.  I’m a deck of Tarot cards, not a knight in shining armor, so I can’t rescue you – you’ll have to pick yourself up and be willing to help yourself when I offer guidance from my cards.  You will have to be open to all messages revealed to you – including the ones that are perceived to be more difficult than you would like to hear about.  I have limited patience for those who choose to wallow in self-pity and have hopes for a quick fix in a situation.

One of the fellows looked away from his arm wrestling for a moment and added, “We’ve all been wounded in life, in some form or another, ma’am.  But our motto is that when the going gets tough, the tough get going!”

Velvet Angel:  What is the quality you hold that drew me to you?

Anna.K Tarot: (2 of Cups)

Through the eyes of the Two of Cups, you saw a happy union!  You saw down-to-earth people in this deck – which mirrors important parts of yourself and the people you love to associate with.

Perhaps it wasn’t truly “love at first sight,” but you knew in your heart and intuition that we could work very well together. I am indeed an honest – and sometimes blunt – sort of deck, since I have a way of bringing out the difficulties and the fears in life for one to explore.  I tend to be practical, but very honest – sometimes perhaps brutally honest.  But I am certainly not without a softer and more compassionate side.  Just like you, I can be sharp or soft, depending on what the circumstances require at any given time.  The dual nature here speaks of how you saw parts of yourself and life experiences mirrored in many of my cards.  The nature of this deck is practical, grounded, and down-to-earth.  I’m not here to put on airs or fancy shows for what I’m not.  I’m here to just be myself and allow you to be yourself.  And this was an appealing factor to you, as it also allowed you to see the possibility for a happy union in our work together.

Velvet Angel:  What do you bring to the table — what are you here to teach me?

Anna.K Tarot: (Page of Swords)

I’m here to teach you about developing new ideas and perspectives in life.  Two ideas from completely different sources can collide to produce a bold new concept!  Sometimes the best ideas will come from the oddest things imaginable.

For example, what kind of interview did you think this would be when you saw all of us from the Five or Rods card coming to your door today?  We don’t want you to miss an opportunity to exchange ideas with others – whether that is a friend you’ve known forever, a complete stranger, or even a child who has knowledge to share.  We think the Pages of our deck are excellent representatives for the qualities of learning!  Life is an arena of continuous learning, and while it can sometimes feel like a “battle field” at times, it’s also showing us something new to challenge our minds and teach us valuable lessons.

We hope to have a positive impact on your way of thinking as we share our wisdom with you.  We hope that, in some way, you’ll be a little bit different than you were before you met us – and we certainly mean that in a very good way!  We are here to challenge and stimulate your way of thinking. We are here to teach you about life.  Now this is not to say that you know nothing about life.  Of course you do!  But again, there is always something new to learn, and there are always new ways to look at that which is already familiar.

We want to help you further expand your curious mind.  We want you to ask questions with an open mind as you draw conclusions and make judgments about what you’re seeing.  As you do so, we hope you’ll be able to cut through the confusion in life more easily . . . and arrive at the truth for any situation you encounter.  We teach about the value of an open mind, because when your mind is open, you’ll be able to see things in a different way or gain the advantage of new perspectives that we will gladly reveal to you.  Knowledge is power . . . and power, when used constructively, can create great things!

(Well, well, well, wiser words could not have been spoken from a King himself!  I’m almost sorry now that I have only one final question to ask of the Anna.K Tarot.  These individuals are really growing on me!)

Velvet Angel:  How can we best work together?

Anna.K Tarot: (Judgement)

When it comes to decisions, evaluations, transformation, and judgements, it’s important that we both be satisfied and at peace with what we discover together – whether it’s something that is seemingly “positive” or “negative.”  With that said, let me digress for just a moment, if you don’t mind.  We don’t like the associations that label something as being “negative.”  Nothing is perfect in life, and no individual is perfect either.  So if we can look at those seemingly “negative” things as lessons on our journey, I believe that we can find the “positive” in a situation if we’re willing to work for that or do what we’re being asked for our highest good.

Our readings must be for the highest good for all involved.  We can work well together by seeing a call to action and paying heed to that – or as in the case of working with other seekers, we can show them the way. We can point out what that “calling” or that message is that one needs to be aware of.  We cannot force anyone to answer the call or heed the message offered, but we can certainly show the way for those who truly want to see it.

We can find answers, resolve doubts, evaluate accomplishments, and reach meaningful conclusions together.  In all things – both words spoken and deeds done – we must also remember our Karma!

We represent a definite step so that no one has to stay still when there are greater things to reach for in life.  We are all about change and renewal, but we must first answer that call for change when it comes knocking at our doors.  Let’s leave our biases, prejudices, and complaints at the door when we explore.  Let’s look at the truth.  In that way, I feel we can work very well together!

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

“Thank you so much for taking the time to interview with me, today.  It has truly been a pleasure.”  I stood up from the table, and the arm wrestling brothers took that as their cue to disengage their arms to shake hands with me.”

“Would you care for any snacks or refreshment?”

“No, no Dearie,” answered one of the pleasant ladies as she scooped up her beloved cat.  “Thank you kindly, but we must take our leave now.  It’s our job to go put up a Christmas tree this afternoon, so we want to have all that done before the others return from shopping today.”

“Very well then,” I said.  “Thank you for coming, and Merry Christmas to you!”

I showed them to the door and almost felt a sense of sadness about their departure.  My, how this deck was growing on me in ways I couldn’t explain.  And then a whisper of a voice came to me out of the blue . . . “Not to worry, Miss!  Your Anna.K Tarot deck is right here for you to visit any time you please.”

The Hezicos Tarot is one of my most recent Tarot deck acquisitions.  I purchased this deck last month.  I decided to do an “interview” with this deck to see what the Hezicos Tarot had to say to me.  For each question, I drew a card from this deck to let it speak to me.

You can do this sort of interview with your own decks, and it can be especially insightful for a brand new deck that you’ve not used yet.  This “Interview Reading” was the first reading I did with the Hezicos Tarot – but I have done many more since!

Interview with the Hezicos Tarot Deck

Velvet Angel:  Tell me about yourself.  What are your characteristics?

Hezicos Tarot: (Knight of Cups)

I’m quite pleasant to work with, and I make good friends with those that I do work with.  Some people are considered to be a “people person,” and I guess you could say that I am a “people deck.”  People find me to be attractive and fun, so I can easily alleviate fears through my gentle and charming nature.  I like to be the Knight in Shining Armor for those who seek me.  I care very much about the feeling side of people.  I work well with emotions.

I have a lot of enthusiasm to share, and I like to have fun in whatever I am doing (responsible fun, of course).  I can make people smile straight from the heart.

Velvet Angel:  What are your strengths?

Hezicos Tarot: (10 of Swords)

While some decks don’t take well to self-pity or martyrdom, if you’re feeling sorry for yourself, I can be a great pick-me-up.  However, please note that my strength lies in telling it like it is, so you might not always like my answers.  Sometimes what you need to hear could feel painfully brutal.  However, my gentle and loving characteristics can also help you see past your own perceived pain.  I can help you deal with the wounds that life and people have inflicted upon you.  I’ll help you find closure when you need to put something to rest.  I will help you deal with an ending so that you don’t ignore a new beginning that awaits.  I am very patient, and I will help you clean your wounds, find healing, and start anew.  I never want anyone to just lay down and give up!  So no matter how bad it appears, I am there for you!  I’ll help you find the will to pick yourself up so that you can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Velvet Angel:  What are your limitations as a Tarot deck?

Hezicos Tarot: (Page of Rods)

Some people might rank me lower than I really deserve, because I am such a cute and charming Tarot deck.  But don’t be fooled, because I can keep up with the best of them.  I’m not here to simply please your emotions (although I can do that, too), but I’m here to help you connect with your inner child when that is what you need to do.  I’m here to help you grow – even when it’s tough to do so.  I’m designed for the inner child of the adult world, so I really don’t work so well with children as you might think.

I’m not the cute deck on the shelf that you can hand to a child, because I do contain some minor nudity within my cards – all in good taste, and nothing vulgar, of course. Don’t believe me?  Check out the 4 of Coins, 9 of Coins, Temperance, the Star, and Judgement.  I am intended for mature audiences, despite my cute appearance.  So please don’t pat my box and say, “Oh, what a cute deck, but I need something practical today” and then turn away.  If you do, you will miss a lot!  Thus, I’m too easily overlooked by those who don’t like “cute” decks.

Like an active child who is demanding to be noticed and heard, I want your attention as well!  I have a lot to share for those who will listen.

Velvet Angel:  What is the quality you have that drew me to you?

Hezicos Tarot: (6 of Swords)

You saw a magical journey when we were first introduced!  You saw an opportunity to help people gently transition between rough waters and calmer ones.  I hold little surprises in so many parts of myself, and you noticed that!  You wanted to sail with me and explore even more of those great discoveries.  Good choice!  Because I can take you places that are worth your time and attention when you give me a chance!

A calm feeling is what you felt upon seeing me – excited yes, no doubt – but the kind of peace you felt was a real connection when we met.  You could envision us traversing through both the rough waters of life as well as the calm ones . . . and that we could do this together successfully.  You saw something that some might miss – you saw and felt that special emotional connection with me, just like some people might miss the emotional aspects of the 6 of Swords, simply because it’s an air card instead of a water card . . . but there is plenty of water to behold in this card!  You truly went with the flow and followed your heart to take a journey with me and allow me to be a part of your world as I wanted you to also be a part of mine.  Together, we can set sail for an amazing journey to seek, find, and share.

Velvet Angel:  What is your favorite question or issue to address in a reading?

Hezicos Tarot: (Reversed 6 of Coins)

I like to address questions from those who feel they don’t have what they want or deserve.  I love to show seekers when and how to get help . . . and also how to give more of themselves so they can get something back in return when they need it.  I promote equality in give and take, so I enjoy questions where balance needs to be restored to a situation.  I can point out to seekers when they are being treated unfairly . . . or when they themselves might be treating or acting unfairly in a situation – whether that unfairness is directed toward others, or even to themselves.  I love to address questions where lessons in responsibility need to come out into the light, whether this relates to financial responsibility, relationship responsibility, work matters, or anything else for which one needs to be their responsible best in life.

Velvet Angel:  How can we best work together?

Hezicos Tarot: (King of Cups)

We can work best together through love and being attentive listeners to both our seekers as well as to our intuition.  We can work together through a myriad of emotions and see the truth in any situation.  And a seeker always needs the truth, along with a healthy dose of tender loving care.  Our kind and gentle natures will blend nicely to help our seekers discover the answers they need to hear.  We might not always be able to tell seekers what they want to hear, but we will indeed tell them what they need to hear.

We can be mature in our conduct together, but we can still have great fun in working with the cards together.  Being responsible and mature does not mean that fun is out of the picture.  In conducting ourselves this way, we can provide helpful advice and support to those who are seeking answers.  Everything we do must be done from a place of love.

If you have noticed, three cards that appeared for this interview are court cards – and so when I said in the beginning that I am a “people deck,” I was quite honest and serious about that, as I have shown you three faces among those in this deck.  It was not merely a coincidence, but is a token of my honest revelations to you and all those who seek me.  You might also wonder why I have not answered questions with any Major Arcana cards.  Well you see, my friend, it’s the everyday bits and pieces of life that lead to the major events.  Working together, though, we’ll definitely be looking at major things in your life that are building, growing, or need to be restored, repaired, nurtured . . . or even that which should be surrendered.  I give you just a small picture now of what we can do and how we can work together, but the bigger picture is waiting in reserves for you to see when you choose to work with me.

Interview with the Infinite Visions Tarot Deck

The Infinite Visions Tarot deck is one of my most recent Tarot Deck acquisitions.  I purchased this deck in October 2010.

I decided to do an “interview” with this deck to see what the Infinite Visions Tarot had to say to me.  For each question, I drew a card from this deck to let it speak to me.

You can do this sort of interview with your own decks, and it can be especially insightful for a brand new deck that you’ve not used yet.

Velvet Angel: Tell me about yourself.  What are your characteristics?

Infinite Visions Tarot: (Reversed Emperor)

I help people regain control of their lives if they are willing to hear my messages.  I will be quite honest about it if I see you are being a tyrant or mismanaging some aspect of your life.  I’m a beautiful deck, but I don’t sugarcoat things.  I will tell you what you need to hear, and sometimes it can feel painfully blunt when the truth hurts or when it hits home.  If the shadow side of a person needs to be revealed, I am the one to do it.  I can point out your strengths, but I can and will also point out any weaknesses that I identify.  I would do neither you nor myself any favors if I don’t call it the way I see it.  So when you think I am being mean and hard, I’m really only trying to help you turn things around for the better within yourself and your life – to help you be the better person you can be.  Sometimes one must be cruel in order to be kind.  It’s all from a place of love to help others be at their rightful best in life.

Velvet Angel: What are your strengths?

Infinite Visions Tarot: (7 of Swords)

You can walk away with so much from a reading with me that you may feel you’re getting more than your fair share of knowledge!  I’ll show you strategies that will help you conquer obstacles in your world – but in the same token, it’s up to you to use this knowledge wisely and to decide when and if the end result will truly justify the means to get what you want.  I can help point out when you are handling things unfairly, but it’s going to be up to you to see that truth and to create the right strategies that you can live with in your own life.  I can point out when you are doing something that is sneaky or sly, and I can make you question your motives and your approaches to a situation.  I can help you find a better way, and I can also help you be alert when the behavior of others is selfish, sly, or sneaky!  I can arm you with the preparation you need to safeguard what is valuable to you . . . and I can also arm you with knowledge of what is right or wrong on your side of a situation.

Velvet Angel: What are your limitations as a Tarot deck?

Infinite Visions Tarot: (10 of Swords)

I don’t have patience for those who are playing the martyr or playing that “woe is me” game.  If you’re feeling sorry for yourself, it’s up to you to pick yourself up.  Don’t expect me to rescue you – you have to help yourself, as a reading is not a quick fix for anyone’s problems.  Self-pity is not productive, and my patience is limited for those who choose to wallow in it.  So those who are choosing me as their deck for a reading should get past feeling sorry for themselves and be willing to learn something that can help them so much more than self-pity will ever be able to help.

I can show you how an ending opens the gate to a new beginning, but it will be up to you to step through that gate.  I cannot do it for you.  Too many seekers expect that a reading will solve all their problems with no action on their part . . . and that is an illusion.  It’s up to each seeker to do the work that is required to get into a better position in life.  It’s not up to me as a Tarot deck.

Velvet Angel: What is the quality you hold that drew me to you?

Infinite Visions Tarot: (3 of Pentacles)

I’m a beautiful deck, but also a practical, workable deck – not just a whimsical or pretty addition for a collection.  I’m both beautiful AND practical – and you can appreciate those combined qualities in a deck you work with.  You are drawn to pretty decks, but you also like to actually work with your decks, versus letting them sit on a shelf unused.  I was shown to you as a practical alternative that will let you have both the qualities you want in a deck – a lovely deck that you enjoy looking at . . . but also a deck that can be a “work horse” if you choose to use me frequently in your work.  We can create something worthwhile and something of beauty in working together.

Velvet Angel: What is one of your favorite questions or issues to address in readings?

Infinite Visions Tarot: (6 of Swords)

I like to help people find a healthy transition in moving from the past to the present and in to the future.  I like to help others move toward calmer waters in life – to aide people in seeing that there really are other directions in life than just conflicting and chaotic ones.  I also like to show seekers when they may be sitting in the calm before the storm, and help them to realize that while they are moving out of one turmoil, there could also be another one waiting.  But in the meantime, I emphasize calmness and taking that break from strife so that one will be in good shape and fully prepared to meet the next battle that comes their way.  So it could be said that my favorite issues are all about finding a way to get past the struggles and the conflicts in life . . . finding ways to seek that safe haven of calmness in a world that doesn’t always treat you well.

Velvet Angel: How can we best work together?

Infinite Visions Tarot: (2 of Pentacles)

Together, we can create a fine balance between work and fun.  I’ll help you get the job done in the readings you do, and you can have fun while doing it!  We can help your seekers navigate their own lives with better balance as well.

We can work through many different issues, questions, or problems among various seekers and for yourself as well.  We can roll with the ups and downs and find workable solutions in creative, fun, and meaningful ways.
